                                                                Departing Mothers

They’re leaving us, departing, our dear mothers,

on tippy-toes

they, step by step, abscond,

while we, stuffed full with food,

snore under covers,

oblivious of woe at hand, becalmed.

The mothers leave, depart from us quite slowly.

Yes.

Their exit only seems to us abrupt.

They slip away in increments, not wholly,

take footsteps small, wish not our lives

to trouble or disrupt.

Then comes the day we feel a nervous shudder,

decide they need a boisterous birthday fete,

But that belated flame of joy

soon sputters,

cannot, for them, for us,

our qualms abate.

They fade away,

they ever fade still farther.

Awakened from our sleep,

we reach for them,

But now we’re faced with half an empty arbor,

They’ve donned an otherworldly diadem!

Too late.

The fateful bell has sounded.

Tears in our eyes, we harken to that knell,

as silently, into far realms unbounded,

our mothers’ austere spectres rise,

bid us a fond farewell . . .

Literal Translation

Wounds

So many times I’ve been so painfully wounded,

That I’ve made it back home at a crawl,

But not only by malice smashed;

For even the petal of a flower can wound.

And I myself have wounded [others]; absolutely inadvertently,

By a casual tenderness on the fly,

But afterwards someone felt pain,

As if walking barefoot on ice.

Why do I go strolling through the ruins

Of those nearest and most dear to me,

I, who myself am so easily and so painfully wounded,

And who so casually wound others?

Hurt People Hurt People

(Wounds)

So often I’ve been wounded, sore offended,

knocked all askew, down on my hands and knees,

and not alone by malice sorely rended,

for the petal of a rose can wound with ease.

And inadvertently I’ve wounded brothers,

by tenderness offhanded thinly sliced,

and afterward the pain was passed to others,

who staggered on as if barefoot on ice.

Why do I trip lightly through the wreckage

Of lives of people near and dear I’ve maimed,

I who, wounded, painfully take umbrage,

Why am I so prone to mete out pain?

(1932-2017)

Somebody’s

I once was like freshets that blow over seascapes. Nobody’s!

Nobody’s, like brooks flowing free on escarpments. Nobody’s!

Not no one’s, like glimmers of early dawn’s rays,

Not no one’s, like starlight in nocturnal haze,

Nobody’s. Nobody’s!

But he who’s not no one’s is ever unfortunate. No one’s!

Like a sky without birds or a pond without fish. Nary no one’s!

He who’s not no one’s will cease to exist,

Like a star that once sparkles, then fades in the mist,

Flamed-out star. Au revoir!

For anguish most dreadful or for my good fortune,

For years of my bliss or for my sad misfortune,

The tide washed you in to me here on the brine,

Floated you up in the foam, made you mine.

I’m guilty, I say, as I cringe on all fours,

In the name of the tide and the foam,

Forgive me for once being not anyone’s,

I’m sorry I once was not nary no one’s,

But now, like the foam and the tide, I’m all yours.

I’m yours!

But. Do you sing-whisper in answer, the song,

“I belong to you. Now and forever”?

No! You’re proud that you’re all on your own and nobody’s. Nobody’s!

But she who’s not no one’s will cease to exist,

Like a star that once sparkles, then fades in the mist,

Flamed-out star. Au revoir!

Seriously now. What if you stop altogether

Your coming to see me? Kaput!

Then I’ll row through the foam and the tides,

Sending letters to you through wet weather.

Wet weather!

You can go to the seashore,

To the foam and the tides and the brine,

You can lasso a seagull or dove,

As if you were catching wet letters

Confessing my love,

My love.

Love!

Truncated Russian Surnames Connoting Bastardy

BASTARD SONS

Pnin is the bastard son of Prince Repnin.

Betskoy is the bastard son of Prince Trubetskoy.

Putin is the bastard son of Grigory Rasputin.

Translation of Poem by Vladimir Mayakovsky, "Наш марш"

(1893-1930)

Literal Translation

Beat in the city square the tramp of revolt!

Higher, you row of proud heads!

With the tide of the second flood

We will wash the cities of worlds.

Skewbald the bull of days.

Slow the cart of years.

Our God is flight.

The heart is our drum.

Is there more heavenly than our gold?

Will the wasp of a bullet sting us?

Our weapons are our songs.

Our gold is ringing voices.

With greenery lie down, meadow,

Line the bottom of the days.

Rainbow, put a harness on

The fast-flying steeds of the years.

You see, the sky of stars is bored!

Without it we weave our songs.

Hey, Great Bear! demand

That we be taken up into heaven alive.

Drink, joys! Sing!

In [our] veins spring is poured out.

Heart, beat out the battle cry!

Our breast is the copper of kettledrums.

In every marketplace tramp out revolt far and wide!

Raise high your proud heads all marching in line.

With Second Flood’s coming in one mighty tide

We’ll wash clean the cities worldwide till they shine!

Bull’s days skewed.

Pulls carts slow.

Our god’s lewd.

Hearts drum, glow.

Ain’t nary heaven more golden than ours.

We’re all immune to the wasp bullet’s sting.

We fight with song that both launders and scours,

Golden our voices that ring out and sing.

Grass lea, lie.

Soothe day’s fears.

Rainbow, tie

Steeds’ rude years.

See there, the heavenly firmament’s bored!

We’ll do without it as we sow our sap.

Hey you, Great Bear of the sky Overlord,

Tell god to take us alive on his lap!

Joys, drink! Sing!

Spring’s awash in our veins.

Heart, pound, ping!

Kettledrum-pound woes and pains.

                                                       Kolotushka: Night Watchman's Rattle

Insomnia. 9

Who sleeps in the night? Not a body or soul!

Shrieking child in a cradle whom none can console,

The old man keeps death watch and ponders his dole,

The youth’s with his loved one and love’s rigmarole,

He breathes in her lips and her charms doth extol.

You fall asleep, will you waken once more?

Take your time, no big hurry to slip through sleep’s door!

The night watchman vigilant wanders the grounds,

With rose-tinted lantern he makes his late rounds,

Staccato-like clacking, he comes ever near,

He rattles his rattle right next to an ear:

Don’t sleep! Stay strong! Listen well, I know best,

Beware endless sleep and perpetual rest!

Note on the Russian Night Watchman’s Rattle (19th and early 20th centuries)

(from website for the A.N. Ostrovsky Museum “Schelykovo”)

Kolotushka. Highlights of the Above Notation in English.

The night watchman’s rattle (kolotushka), a fixture in Russian rural life of the nineteenth century, has an ancient history; the rattle is known to have been used in Great Novgorod as early as the eleventh to twelfth centuries.

The night watchman made his rounds of the village in the dead of night, clacking his rattle, which informed the villagers that he was alert and watching over them. Wolves and foxes, say, would know to keep their distance, and thieves as well. But most importantly, the watchman looked out for fires, the bane of village life. The peasant huts were wooden, with thatch roofs, and the only illumination inside was provided by a splint light (luchina), a primitive slender chip of wood that had an open flame when lit. Fires were a frequent occurrence; they spread rapidly, and whole villages could burn down.

With the invention of electricity, the need for the night watchman as fire fighter/preventer was eliminated, and the kolotushka took on a less practical function: as a toy, baby’s rattle, or percussion musical instrument.
