Translation of Poem by Robert Rozhdestvensky,

Nocturne

Between me and you lies the hum of nonbeing,

Seascapes star-spangled

And clandestine seas.

How goes your living in time out of being,

My tender one, strange one,

Spring bloom of heartsease?

If you wish, if you may,

Cast a stray thought my way,

Think of me, dear,

Think of me.

Be it but once and be it offhanded,

Think one idle thought about me,

You abiding, perduring

Great love of my life!

Between me and you lie the eons of ages,

Lie instants and years

And wild dreams of stargazers.

I tell eons and ages,

And stargazing sages

To fly now to where

You abide free of fears;

I still love you, you see,

With a love ever stronger,

I’m a chronic, deep-rooted

And diehard lovemonger.

How goes your living these days,

My spring bloom, my tender

And fragrant heartsease?

I wish you all happiness,

Dearest of dear,

Abiding, perduring

Great love of my life!

I’ll come to your aid if you call, only call,

Simply call out to me, softly call.

And let be with you,

Stay with you,

Perduring, undying,

Immutably be

The light of my love,

The cry of my love,

The pain of my love.

Only stay as you were,

And be ever the same,

Live trembling and quavering on.

Make sure you live sunnily,

Sure you live joyfully,

Through tears whatsoever

Live happily ever,

In happiness live your way

On and still on.

Between me and you

Are sheer eons of ages,

Are instants and years

And wild dreams of stargazers.

I tell eons and ages,

And stargazing sages

To fly now to where

You abide free of fears;

I still love you, you see,

Even more through the years.

And throughout vast ages

May be with you, stay with you,

Perduring, undying,

Immutable be,

The light of my love,

The cry of my love,

The pain of my love.

Through life whatsoever

Be happy forever,

Live happily ever

And ever, and ever,

Through ever-forever,

Perduring, undying,

Spring bloom

Of heartsease.

Funguses Amongus Us

There are funguses amongus us, amongus us are funguses. “The largest living organism on earth today is a fungus in Oregon just beneath the ground, covering 3.7 square miles and estimated to weigh as much as thirty-five thousand tons.”

Hua Hsu in The New Yorker, May 18, 2020

Urghh. That makes me feel somehow numb. In our numbnesses we contemplate the funguses so wondrousus amongus us.

Why, when your brain hears certain combinations of words, does your brain get up on its tippy-toes and dance?

(1933-2017)

Dispersement

We shake and we rattle in jam-packed tramcars,

We’re juddered and shaken, we’re hem and we’re haw;

The tubeway digests us like luscious Mars bars,

Or blows us in smoke from its voracious maw.

In streets all a-bustle, in flutter-white fluster,

We people walk next to more people like us;

The breaths from all mouths coalesce in a cluster,

The tracks that we leave are comingled in dust.

The tracks that we leave are comingled in dust.

We pull from our pockets the fags and tobacco,

While bleating and humming the latest pop bling,

We elbow and jostle the inflow and backflow,

“Excuse me,” we say, or we say not a thing.

Through Chancery Lane or King’s Cross or Aldgate,

Each of us has a discrete way traversing,

We know not each other; anonymous freight,

We’re shipped all together, not touching, dispersing;

We bump at each other, not touching, dispersing.

Translation of Poem by Marina Tsvetaeva, МАРИНА ЦВЕТАЕВА, "Осень в Тарусе," AUTUMN IN TARUSA

Monument to Marina Tsvetaeva in Tarusa

1892-1941

 1909? 1911?

Autumn in Tarusa

A morning of clarity, cool,

Gambols in meadow, light frisking.

Barge on clear water cerule

Along the Oka downstream drifting.

One phrase hums on in your head,

Repeating words over and over.

Jingling bells dinning sounds spread,

Faintly o’er fields of white clover.

Is it carts on their way to the meadow?

Are they off today’s threshing to do?

Eyes on eyes glances bestow,

Destinies twisting askew.

Blue distant haze midst the pines,

Dim humming speech where they thresh . . .

Autumn smiles broadly betimes

At spring soon to be sprung afresh.

Life’s come undone; all the same,

Oh, for those days brightly golden!

They ask of the Lord, they exclaim,

“Can we be that far bygone, that olden?”

From the Internet

Tarusa

Town in Kaluga District, on the banks of the River Oka; present population about 10000. There the Tsvetaeva family had a dacha with a wonderful orchard of fruit trees. Marina Tsvetaeva loved the town, gloried in its quietude and peace. Her mother died in Tarusa in 1906, and her daughter Ariadna died there in 1975. Marina dreamed of being buried in Tarusa, but that was not to be. Ariadna is buried there.
