Translation of Poem by Aleksandr Blok,

                                                                    Loneliness

River-borne were wind-blown icefloes,
Spring had come, the winds were moaning.
From fireplace flamed out, in nightclothes,
Vaguely drifted shades of gloaming.

By hearth he sat there saturnine,
Burned out now, sorely agonized;
And with a gaze once aquiline,
The cooling ashes scrutinized.

In evening’s twilight wafted quietly
Visions of his days long past,
While shadows rife with stark dubiety
Awakened sorrows sleeping fast.

Alone, alone, by all neglected,
Immobilized, but still alive,
He nodded his tired head dejected,
To icons past from duskingtide.

His former friends, stark images,
His enemies, their faces cruel,
Beloved and loving visages
Float up as if from murky pool.

Forgotten, written off by all,
No need to wait in self-torment;
His dim eyes look on evenfall,
See heaps of ash and dreams undreamt.

Where had aspirations gone?
What held in thrall his poor brainpower?
Mad dashings he recalled bygone,
The anguish of past thoughts turned sour.

How sweet it felt to be so tired,
To feel a joy like ne’er before,
No more in toil, disruptions mired,
Your heart no more belabored, sore,

No flattery, nor love or fame,
No lucid dreams, nor losses dire.
Majestic memories made their claim,
Like storm clouds swathed the sunset’s fire,

They piled high in heaps the towers,
Erected towns and walls upraised,
Where firmament of yellow lours,
In menace steeped as in past days . . .

From fireplace flamed out, in nightclothes,
Floated, drifted blurs of gloaming.
River-borne were wind-blown icefloes,
Spring had come, the winds were moaning.

Translation of Poem by Aleksandr Blok,

Boozer inebriate, shamelessly sinning,
Losing all count of the nights and the days;
Head in an alcohol haze dully spinning,
He slinks into God’s holy temple edgeways,

Bending three times in a penitent bow,
And seven times crossing himself fervently,
Then stealthily pressing his ardent hot brow
Against spit-begrimed flagstones, debris.

Copper coin placing in the plate by the painting,
Three times, then seven more times pressing on,
Kissing the antique and cheaply made framing
Of that many-times-over-kissed ancient icon.

On the way homeward he weighs up the worthiness
Of his own self as equal to that coin of brass;
At his flat a dog, hungry and reeking in manginess,
With a hiccup he kicks him aside to go past.

Sits by the icon, beneath intercessor,
Tea-drinking, abacus clicking through checks,
Then opens a drawer of the pot-bellied dresser,
Pulls out and licks through each voucher’s prospects,

Finally on mattress divine, featherbedded,
Sinks down in abysses of deepest sleep sea . . .
Be you as he is, my Russia thickheaded,
You’re dearer than all other places to me.

Translation of Poem by Aleksandr Blok,

                                                        Fra Filippo Lippi's "Assumption"

(1880-1921)

Dormition

Her body in swaddling, unsung,

They placed in a wood of sheer loveliness.

The torments had made her look young,

Restored to her erstwhile comeliness.

For the last time came Gabriel in twilight,

Old now, the archangel, much lessened his powers,

Put into her fingers clenched tight

A bouquet of fragrant white flowers.

The faraway mountains were gilden

With dusk’s valedictory glow,

And over the valley haze silken

Three kings arose, dead long ago.

Guided they were, as before,

By a star, this one new and austere;

Wizened gray shepherds, as in days of yore,

Came down with their sheep—to her bier.

Patron and warder of endless repose,

Darkness embraced the earth’s umber.

Between star and dusk o’er the meadows

Glistened halos of gold without number.

Higher up steep ravines, hillocks sloping,

Burbling stream and an almond in bloom;

Standing guard by sarcophagus open,

An angel looked on distant gloom.

Translator’s Note

According to an annotation in a one-volume collection of Blok’s poetry, this poem—part of Blok’s series of Italian Verses—was inspired by a fresco of the Italian painter Fra Filippo Lippi (c. 1406-1469), in the cathedral altar of the city of Spoleto, Italy. This is one of several Scenes from the Life of the Virgin Mary that Lippi painted as frescoes in the Spoleto Cathedral: Nativity, Annunciation, Coronation, Assumption.

Between 1467 and 1469 Fra Filippo Lippi began and largely executed the fresco cycle with scenes from the life of the Virgin in the main chapel of Spoleto cathedral; the series was completed by Fra Diamante with the assistance of Lippi's still very young son, Filippino. Fra Filippo died in Spoleto and was buried in the cathedral.

Very few of the details in the Blok poem match those of the Lippi painting, and, quite possibly, a compendium of Assumption/Dormition paintings, viewed by the poet both abroad and in Russia, inspired these verses. The detail of the swaddled Mother of God (first stanza) is not, as far as I know, typical of Italian Renaissance paintings, but is widespread in Eastern Orthodox icons of the Dormition. Frequently there are two images of the God Mother in one icon painting: one of the demised Virgin on her bier, the other, that of a baby or child, swaddled in white and held by Christ. Given such a detail in Blok’s poem, I have used the Eastern Orthodox term, Dormition, for the title, rather than the term preferred in Western Christianity, Assumption.

Translation of Poem by Aleksandr Blok, АЛЕКСАНДР БЛОК, "Приближается звук," THE DRONING COMES NEAR

                                             Blok Family Manor House: SHAKHMATOVO

(1880-1921)

The droning comes near. And, in thrall to the burdensome whine,

My soul back to young days goes easing.

In the dream I press lips to what once was your hand (once was mine),

Holding breath, not breathing.

Dreaming again I’m a boy, then a lover once more,

A ravine, weeds and stubble,

Wild dog rose in the weeds—prickly brambles galore,

Evening fog midst the rubble.

Through flowers and leaves and the thorns of the briars I see

The old manor house, into my heart peering,

The sky once again, glowing pink end to end, looks at me,

And that window is yours, the one tearing.

The droning is your voice; its recondite, clandestine whine

All my life and my sadness eclipse.

If only in Dream, to what once your dear hand (once was mine),

            I press my lips.
