In the wee small hours
all rooms are pitch black,
and every voice is dark;
in hours wee, oblivious
all beautiful women fastidious,
are equally—guilelessly—
lascivious.
And each the
other in talk misperceives,
in the wee hours beauties and thieves.
You walk past
your own house, you stagger,
for that house seems not yours in wee hours!
And your neighbor looks strange to you, glowers,
and behind every back there’s a dagger.
And in impotent
rage they swish-rustle,
enormous black trees full of bustle.
O so narrow,
that underground bed,
in the wee hours, dark hours, black!
I’m afraid I’ll arise from bedstead
and whisper and lips kiss, hold back . . .
My dear children, please pray,
pray for me,
in the midnight hours one, two or three.
In the wee small hours
all rooms are pitch black,
and every voice is dark;
in hours wee, oblivious
all beautiful women fastidious,
are equally—guilelessly—
lascivious.
in the wee hours beauties and thieves.
for that house seems not yours in wee hours!
And your neighbor looks strange to you, glowers,
and behind every back there’s a dagger.
enormous black trees full of bustle.
in the wee hours, dark hours, black!
I’m afraid I’ll arise from bedstead
and whisper and lips kiss, hold back . . .
in the midnight hours one, two or three.
