(1870-1953)

On the Pond
Clear is the
morning on pond’s quietude,
Swallows in flutters flaunt briskly their bling,
Descending in broad swoops toward wet plenitude,
Dipping just barely in moisture one wing.
They warble and
twitter high-pitched on the fly,
All around in shrill greenness the meadows abound,
While the pond stands, a mirror-smooth sigh,
Reflecting its banks, in sheer rapture spellbound.
And as if in a
mirror, amidst reeds and debris,
From the banks topples over a forest slantwise,
And drowned are the wisps of the clouds’ filigree
In the depths of reflected blue skies.
What’s left of
the clouds is whiter and flimsy,
The deeps of the waters are endless and bright . . .
From the fields sounds a droning o’er aqueous whimsy,
The matin bells peal from the church out of sight.
