Translation of Poem by Afanasy Fet, Афанасий Фет, "Жизнь пронеслась без явного следа," LIFE HAS RUSHED BY

Life has rushed by and left so little trace.
The soul was thrust toward who could say what place?
And with what goal it knew of in advance?
But all my dreams, harsh tumult of first days,
Albeit joyful, languishing in haze,
Approach the final last-abode expanse.

Just so, concluding its coarse bawdy spree,
From naked fields the prickly snow flies free,
Propelled by early blizzard fiercely blowing,
And halting on a wasteland mist-bedewed,
The flakes cohere in silence argent-hued
To form a frigid snowbed dimly glowing.

Translation of Poem by Afanasy Fet, А.А. Фет, "Грезы," REVERIES

А.А. Фет
(1820-1892)

Что умер я и в грезы погружен;

Вдруг колокол — и всё уяснено;

И радостней всех голосов земли;

                                   Reveries

I dreamt I slept, a slumber deep and peaceful,
That I had died, in reveries was sheathed;
So wondrously caressing and soft-easeful,
A shade of hope inspired that dream sweet-wreathed:

Sheer bliss is near; what kind I can’t prehend.
A sudden peal of bells and all’s transparent;
Pure light floods through my soul, I comprehend
That happiness lies in these sounds sussurant!

More pure the sounds, more joyful and translucent
Than any voice that rings out on this earth;
They swathe me as I’m borne through meadows lucent
To some far graveyard promising rebirth.

I feel beatitude and stifled torment,
I try to rise, to breathe at least once more,
And to that sound exultant, deliquescent,
I sail to drown in darkness evermore.

Translation of Poem by Afanasy Fet, IN VAIN

Painting by Ernst Neizvestny

(1820-1892)

И тягостно сердцу, что лгать я обязан всечасно;

Что жребии жизни святым побужденьям враждебны;

All in vain!
Look where I may, everywhere I encounter ruination,
Heavy laden am I with these lies that my heart can’t sustain;
While smiling at you I conceal bitter tears of vexation.
All in vain.

Estrangement!
To think of the torments the soul of a man suffers through!
And all that it takes is one sound to recall the derangement.
I stand like a madman, not grasping the words all askew.
Estrangement.

Rendezvous!
Break that cup, for in it lies a droplet of hope and fond yearning.
Hope that will prolong/intensify torment and rue,
In dreams swathed in haze I’m enveloped in craving and burning,
Seeking rendezvous.

Not just we
Have used impotent words to express the brute strength of desires.
From time out of mind humankind has lived never of agony free,
Now it’s our turn, but some suffering others will writhe on in fires,
Not just we.

But it hurts
When the fates turn out hostile to sacred and holy inducements;
If only to merge with the sacrosanct, conquer Weltschmerz . . .
But no! Rip out the sacred, for ulcers appease the traducements;
But it hurts.

Translation of Poem by Afanasy Fet, ЛИХОРАДКА, "The Fever Fiends"

Afanasy Fet
(1820-1892)

1847

Literary Translation/Adaptation by U.R. Bowie

                                                             The Fever Fiends

--Nanny, dear, things taste so sour;
Bring me sugar in some rum.
I feel all feverish and dour,
Our house is cold, and I’m all numb . . .

--Oh, dear child, may God bless you;
Don’t get near stoves; oh no, do not!
I always keep my door pulled to,
You know we heat the house too hot.

--You should have put the curtain down . . .
Give me a book . . . No, never mind . . .
Just now you said there’s ghouls around . . .
I was joking! . . . That’s ill-timed . . .

--Don’t tell jokes in morning light!
Trust me when I speak of mayhem;
Evil sisters walk by night,
The fever fiends, there’s nine of them,

They’re sent by him, the evil one
To sleeping men; they kiss your lips!
He brings afflictions, fevers and
Now he’s sicced on you his imps.

--I think you’re right! Bring some hot tea.
The dream was fuzzy, but it seemed
She kissed me on the lips . . .  woe’s me!
Could she have been a fever fiend?

Translation of Poem by Afanasy Fet, "Ласточки пропали, SWALLOWS GONE

                                                        Blok Verses on Wall in Holland

Afanasy Fet
(1820-1892)

Swallows gone, all southbound;
Yesterday at sunrise
Rooks were massing, black-gowned,
Scintillating, wheeling round
On that yonder rise.

Gloaming now, all’s sleeping,
Outside murk and rain.
Dry leaf windborne sweeping,
Wind at midnight shrieking,
Knocks at windowpane.

Send me snow, a whiteout,
Air to breathe that’s robust!
As if in fear or misdoubt,
Cranes are trilling, calling out,
Flying on a southward gust.

You go outside, and, perforce,
So grim—my God!—remorse.
You look across the grassland sprawl:
A tumbleweed on aimless course
Is bouncing like a ball.

Translation of Poem by Afanasy Fet, "У камина," BY THE HEARTH

Afanasy Fet
(1820-1892)

                                                                By the Hearth

The coals grow dim, at murk malign
Transparent flames are licking.
Thus pulsates on a bloom carmine
A lazuline-winged moth picnicking.

A potpourri of visions vivid
Bring comfort to my tired eyes,
And faces blurry, pallid, livid
Gaze from the ashes—mesmerize.

Past happiness and grief’s sad song
With amity caressing, swelling;
My soul lies—says, “Bygones be gone,”
While deep remorse inside is welling.

Translation of Poem by Afanasy Fet, "Целый мир от красоты," ONE WHOLE WORLD OF BEAUTY MADE

Afanasy Fet
(1820-1892)

Literary Translation/Adaptation by U.R. Bowie

One whole world of beauty made,
Beauty grand and beauty meagre;
Your search is futile, unpathwayed,
For you’ll not find its font or meter.

What’s a day or what’s an age
Appraised by time’s unbounded gauge?
Though one man’s life is brief, not lasting,
Mankind partakes of everlasting.

Translation of Poem by Afanasy Fet, Афанасий Фет, "Морская даль во мгле туманной," A DISTANT SEASCAPE

(1820-1892

Морская даль во мгле туманной;

Тяжеловесна, как стекло;

 1857

Literary Translation/Adaptation by U.R. Bowie

A distant seascape, misty dimness;
A sail sinks in fog malign,
While waves in fury, ceaseless grimness,
Roll in and break on my shoreline.

And one tall billow my gaze captures
As it rolls in to meet me here;
I stare at its steep ridge enraptured,
The moist stones wait as it draws near.

A seagull soars, pure grace alive,
Its sharp wing steady, smoothly creamed,
But now the massive bulk’s arrived,
So heavy-burdened, glassy-sheened;

The billow smashes wall of stone,
On flagstone slabs its clamor sounding—
And specks of sodden off-white foam
Fly wind-blown spattering, abounding.

Translation of Poem by Afanasy Fet,

Alpine Crags

Beyond forest lies forest; behind mountains escarpments,
Beyond dark crags lies lilac-and-blue cerulescence,
And if one fixes eyes on the scene, sharp and ardent,
Behind each pale row one sees more iridescence.

A dark oak looms here, and an ash tree of emerald,
And there flows a tenderly melting azure . . .
As if from reality strangely dismembered,
You’re borne off away into vast realms of pure.

And toward that distant lustre the soul would lief to fly,
Struck not by awe, but sheer beatitude,
As if there’s nothing novel in that cerulescent sky:
One’s sweet dreams once were azure, blue-imbued.

Translation of Poem by Afanasy Fet, Афанасий Фет, "Солнце садится, и ветер утихнул летучий," "Like Unto Gloamings"

(1820-1892)

Нет и следа тех огнями пронизанных туч;

Только закат будет долго чуть зримо гореть;

Like Unto Gloamings

Sun going down, the volatile wind in the trees has subsided;
No trace is left now of those storm clouds once pierced by bright fire;
Still alive but not searing, one shuddering ray is ignited,
Lighting the steppe and then fading away to expire.

The sun is gone now, the day’s ceaseless striving, ambitions,
What’s left of the sunset will burn out for long in the sky;
O, if only the heavens might tune me to gloamings’ monitions:
Eschewing last torments, to contemplate life and then die!

Translation of Poem by Afanasy Fet, Афанасий Афанасьевич Фет, "Кот поет, глаза прищуря," "Eyes asquint, the tomcat purrs"

* * *

Поводил и всё поет;

1842

d

Literary Translation/Adaptation by U.R. Bowie

Eyes asquint, the tomcat purrs,

Small boy drowsing on the floor,

In the courtyard snowstorm whirs,

Wind is whistling through the door.

“Quite enough of dawdling, quite;

Put away your toys, get up!

 Come and kiss me nighty-night,

Then to bed you go, young pup.”

The boy arises, cat’s eyes shadow

His departure, purring on;

Snow in clumps sticks to the window,

Snowstorm whistles far and long.
